ABOUT JUVENAL SANSÓ
With more than 70 years of professional art, from paintings to prints and various art experiments, along with countless solo shows and major exhibitions in the Philippines and abroad, and with individual collections in prominent museums including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of New York, Cleveland Art Museum, Ateneo Art Gallery, and the Ayala Museum, among many others, Juvenal Sansó is the quintessential artist, dedicating most of his life to the visual arts.
Born on November 23, 1929 in Reus, Spain, the Philippine-residing Sansó never rested on his laurels. Instead, he continued to create art that resonated with various audiences and generations, even in his advanced years. In the 2000s, Sansó was conferred the Presidential Medal of Merit awardee and The Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the Republic of France for his major, international contributions to art.
Throughout his career, Sansó sought to educate, openly sharing his knowledge, experience, and opinions in the field to anyone who needed it; he was the fastidious archivist who carefully compiled and organized his art, notes, correspondence, and photographs, that proved to be extremely helpful for current-day research not only on the artist, but on modern art in general during the various periods of his life.
Most importantly, Sansó makes it a point to assist younger artists in succeeding in their field. Sansó, via correspondence to friends, wrote of his wish to help budding art students achieve their dreams. His wish for philanthropy was finally granted when Fundacion Sansó was established in 2014, and several programs for scholarships and curatorial grants were formed as part of the foundation’s vision.
Juvenal Sansó passed away in Manila on March 28, 2025 at the age of 95, but his legacy lives on in his art, and in his programs for Fundacion Sansó.
