Mutya, which means amulet or pearl in English is also a common name for Filipina women. It is the first series of our Filipiniana collection where we feature traditional Philippine clothing in our products.
Mutya features the Maria Clara gown which is also known as Traje de Mestiza. It is a traditional dress which is worn by aristocratic women in the Philippines during the 1800’s. It takes its name from Maria Clara, a character from Noli me Tangere written by our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal.
The Maria Clara gown traditionally consists of a “camisa” or blouse, a “saya” or long skirt, “tapis” – a rectangular cloth worn over the skirt and a “panuelo” a kerchief which is worn over the shoulders.
